Palos Verdes Golf Club

“Palos Verdes is a work of art. Every hole is a feature in itself. A few hours spent on this course cannot help but make one envious of those fortunate who claim PVGC as their home course.”

– Darise L. Darsie - Golf Writter, 1930

The History

Palos Verdes Golf Club opened on November 15, 1924. The golf course was designed and built by the team of William P. “Billy” Bell and George C. Thomas. It is a classic example of courses built during the era that has become known as the “Golden Age of Golf Course Architecture”. Other examples of their work in Southern Calif. include, the North Course at Los Angeles CC, Riviera CC, Bel Air CC, as well as the Ojai Valley Inn Golf Course.

The course is located in the middle of an 800-acre parkland preserve overlooking Santa Monica Bay with ocean views visible from several holes. It underwent a complete renovation in 2013 to restore it to its original design under the supervision of golf course Architect Todd Eckenrode of Origins Golf Design. All bunkers were rebuilt, three greens were re-built while adding chipping areas around all greens, three new fairway bunkers, new back tees were added to holes where appropriate, and several trees were removed to restore ocean views that had been lost over the years.

While not long by modern standards at 6,219 yards par 71 (6,490 from the black tees), four sets of tees provide a challenge for all level of golfers. The combination of barrancas, creeks, and 74 bunkers requires strategically placed tee shots and accurate approach shots to small, well-manicured greens. The front nine is one of the few courses with what is called a “perfect nine” in that there are no two consecutive holes with the same par.

Top Holes At Palos Verdes Golf Club

Top Holes At Palos Verdes Golf Club #1, PAR 7, 392 YARDS

#1, PAR 4, 392 YARDS

The first hole is a slight dogleg to the right Par 4 that can play longer into a prevailing wind. A good drive avoids the left-hand fairway bunker and carries the ridge to set up a short to medium approach shot. Your approach will play uphill to an elevated green that is bunkered to the left and right. Beware of the false front of this redesigned green as short shots will roll back down to the fairway.

Top Holes At Palos Verdes Golf Club #2, PAR 3, 203 YARDS

#2, PAR 3, 203 YARDS

A long par 3 with a bunkers just right of the green and another just to the left of the green. Again, the green is pitched from back to front and the play is to keep the ball under the hole leaving you an uphill putt or pitch. This hole usually plays into the prevailing wind.

Top Holes At Palos Verdes Golf Club #10, PAR 4, 364 YARDS

#10, PAR 4, 364 YARDS

A slight dogleg left par 4, where the tee shot is downhill and then back uphill for the approach shot. Positioning your tee shot is crucial to give you the best angle into a green that is tree-lined and well bunkered in front.

Top Holes At Palos Verdes Golf Club #12 PAR 4/3, 283 YARDS

#12 PAR 4/3, 283 YARDS

A short uphill dogleg right par 4, where a big hitter can go for the green. With out of bounds on the left and trees lining the right side, positioning off the tee is crucial for your approach into the well bunkered and smallest green on the course.

Top Holes At Palos Verdes Golf Club #14, PAR 4, 439 YARDS

#14, PAR 4, 439 YARDS

A slight dogleg left par 4, which has a barranca running down the entire left side all the way to the green. An ideal tee shot is right center of the fairway which will open up the angle into the green that is sloped front to back and surrounded by bunkers.

Top Holes At Palos Verdes Golf Club #18, PAR 4, 401 YARDS

#18, PAR 4, 401 YARDS

A dogleg right par 4 is the finishing hole. An ideal tee shot is to aim at the fairway bunker down the left side with a slight cut. If you try to cut too much off the corner, you can be blocked by the trees on the right. The approach shot plays more uphill than it looks, so be sure to take one more club. This very large green is sloped from back to front and is surrounded by big bunkers on each side and another bunker in the back right.
