Club History

The History

Oakmont Country Club’s history begins on a plot of land known as the Arroyo Verdugo. Like many institutions in Southern California, it came into existence largely because of the promotional end. Thus, Oakmont was born. Memberships went on sale in 1922 and the construction of the clubhouse and golf course commenced in 1923.

The golf course underwent an extensive redesign by renowned architect Brian Curley in 2008 and reopened to rave reviews in 2009. It is a place of rich history. Ben Hogan played here. So did Tiger Woods. So did Annika Sorenstam. The LPGA has held several tournaments at Oakmont and the club has hosted such events as the U.S. Open qualifier and the Pac-10 Men’s Golf Championship.

Top Holes At Oakmont Golf Club #4 from tee

#4 from tee

The par 4 fourth hole is a tough golf hole. The hole plays longer than the yardage as it is often into the wind. There is a large bunker in the left side of the fairway that forces players to make decisions. After navigating the tee shot the hole gets even tougher. The player must now hit a uphill second to a green that is guarded by bunkers in the front and a green that is pitched severely from back to front.

#9 from behind green

The 9th hole at Oakmont is a great test of golf that is a par 4 for the players playing the back tees, and a par 5 for most others. The architect has created a wonderful hole full of obstacles all the way along the hole. The tee shot get narrower the longer you hit it. So play conservative and you should be fine, but if you want to get home in two you will have to hit one of your best shots. The shot into the green is uphill and guarded by several bunkers in front. Once you are on the green you are not done as there is a large slope back to front that makes putting a real challenge.

#16th Hole

The short par three 16th offers so much variety in shots and club selection with its lengthy green and bunkers surrounding the entire hole. The player must choose their distance and trajectory perfectly to keep the ball on the correct level of the green. This is a three level green with the lowest level being in the middle of the green.

#17th Green

The 17th is one of the most scenic holes in Southern California. From all angles this holes is stunning. The drive requires the player to land between two large bunkers. Then the player must carry a native area and thread it between two bunkers to hit this very small target.

#17th from Second Shot

The second shot into the 17th is both challenging and beautiful. The small green is surrounded by hundred year old oak trees and several bunkers. The shot must land between the two front bunkers that pinch in to try and catch your ball. If you can manage to land on this green you will have a reasonable birdie putt since the green is one of the smallest on the course.

#18 Greenside

The 18th hole at Oakmont Country Club is the signature hole on the course. The holes measures over 600 yards from the back tees. If the length and the dogleg were not enough then you have to negotiate this very tricky green site. The large bunkers to the left of the green force players to go right, but the large slope of this green is from right to left and makes chipping very difficult. The green is also surrounded by some of the most beautiful oak trees in California. This is a wonderful place to end your round.
